July - September Activities
Throughout the summer, ATTAC performed sanitary surveys, coordinated an Organizational Management class with RUBA in Thorne Bay, and instructed one Intro to Small Water Systems Workshop in Tazlina.
ATTAC also coordinated the technical presentations for the 24th Annual Southeast Alaska Water Wastewater Management Association’s (AWWMA) conference in Sitka, September 30 – October 1. Twenty one presentations covering water, wastewater and utility management were available to participants. Sixty-five people attended the conference and among them forty-five operators from numerous SE Alaska communities earned CEUs to maintain their State certifications.
ATTAC concluded its efforts coordinating the revision of the Introduction to Small Water
Systems Manual. Any agency in the State of Alaska is given the right to reproduce and use the manual within the State of Alaska for any legitimate training purpose. For more information, please contact ATTAC.

Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP)
AWWMA will be hosting the SJWP National Competition in Anchorage in 2009! The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is the most prestigious international youth award for a high school water science research. The prize taps into the unlimited potential of today's high school students as they seek to address current and future water challenges. High school students (grades 9-12) who enter a water-related project in any local or regional science fair are eligible to participate in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition. Projects may focus on local, regional, national, or global issues.
Each year, more than 65,000 students from across the United States enter projects in local science fairs. Of those participants, all high school students with water-related projects are eligible to enter the state Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition. State winners and their science teachers receive a free trip to the U.S. national competition, which takes place in a different city every year (Anchorage 2009!). For more than a decade, the U.S. competition has continued to grow, and it is now an exciting three-day event. Students from nearly all 50 states come together each summer to display their research, take part in fun, educational activities, and just talk water.
The national winner and his or her science teacher represent the United States at the international competition. Held each August in
Stockholm, Sweden, it is truly a royal affair. The competition takes place during World Water Week and is full of impressive events,
culminating in an awards presentation by the Princess of Sweden. With participants from about 30 countries, the week-long event is as
much a cultural experience as it is an educational one. It provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to connect with other
young researchers from around the world who, just like them, are meeting water challenges head on.
We need your help to make this a success! If you are interested in participating in planning this once in a lifetime opportunity contact the SJWP Committee!
