The Health Care Privacy and Security Certificate was created in response to the growing complexity of data access and disclosure, particularly the full implementation of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Students are introduced to the legal and ethical implications of data disclosure, and are given an overview of state and federal laws, client rights and responsibilities, contracts, corporate liability, and professional liability. Students who complete this program are prepared to work in a variety of employment settings, particularly healthcare-related facilities.

This certificate also meets current employer training needs for advancing your skills and opportunities in the field.

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offers two credentialing exams: Certified Privacy Officer and Certified Security Officer.

This certificate contains coursework that applies toward the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Health Information Management.
