Hannah Lager: 2012 CIOS Excellence Award

Hannah Lager

"I wanted to take some courses for personal development, and UAS was a convenient, affordable option in Juneau. I really like that distance courses are available, but so is the campus. I’ve taken a mix of distance and in-person classes, and it’s great to have the campus resources available when you need them."

Hannah Lager will receive her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Information and Office Systems, with an emphasis in Web Development, at the University of Alaska’s commencement ceremony on May 6 at 2 p.m.

Hannah was born and raised in Juneau, Alaska and she feels lucky to have had access to a university that offers so many amazing programs in her home town. Despite being local, most of Hannah’s coursework has been completed through the distance program, which allowed her to take classes while maintaining full-time employment. She initially enrolled in classes for personal development, but found Colleen McKenna’s classes so engaging that she  took more, and then more after that. She is glad she started out taking classes that she found personally interesting, because they inspired her to continue her education with the University of Alaska Southeast.

When not busy with school, Hannah enjoys creating websites, reading, taking photographs, shoe collecting, quilting, and window shopping for gadgets she doesn’t need. She has participated in the Lego Robotics Corporate Challenge through the Juneau Economic Development for the past two years, and was part of the winning team in 2011. She plans to continue attending UAS in the fall, though her future course of study is unknown.

The CIOS department unanimously voted for Hannah Lager for the CIOS Excellence Award based on the high quality of her work, her motivation to succeed, and her professional and positive attitude. This award is given to a student who demonstrates leadership both in class and in the community, enthusiasm for learning, and who represents the best and brightest CIOS students at UAS. In her coursework, Hannah never settled for mediocre. She challenged herself to go beyond the minimum requirements for class projects, and to apply what she was learning to the real world. We thank Hannah for her contributions to the UAS community.

UAS' 2012 Juneau Commencement will be held May 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the UAS Recreation Center.
