Maren Haavig: 2012 MBA Excellence Award, Master of Business Administration
“Faculty here really go the extra mile to create a supportive learning environment. At first I was hesitant about taking classes online but the UAS course management system was easy to navigate.”
I was born and raised in Sitka. I have been in Juneau since 1994. Right out of high school I attended Western Washington University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. Several years later, I decided to go back to school for an Accounting degree. I considered going to other schools but since I was living in Juneau at the time it made sense to attend UAS. My accounting training at UAS could not have prepared me more for the work world and the CPA exam.
During my last semester as an undergraduate, the SOM offered a course designed to assist students with passing the business law section of the CPA exam. Accounting faculty volunteered their time to meet with my study group on Saturday mornings to answer questions, provide study tips and offer general moral support as we prepared for the CPA exam. That assistance was invaluable towards my successful completion of this difficult professional exam.
It has always been a personal goal to obtain a Masters degree. Two years ago I decided it was time. There are many options for online degree programs to choose from. My undergraduate experience at UAS was so wonderful. While many of the faculty have changed, the overall feeling is the same. Faculty here really go the extra mile to create a supportive learning environment. At first I was hesitant about taking classes online but the UAS course management system was easy to navigate. While I am very excited to be finished, I really did enjoy my time as a UAS graduate student.
My hobbies include sports that allow me to enjoy the outdoor recreational opportunities here in Juneau including winter skiing and snowshoeing and summer running, biking and hiking.
UAS' 2012 Juneau Commencement will be held May 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the UAS Recreation Center.
