2013 Student Speaker & Outstanding Graduate — Social Science: Forest Haven

Forest Haven

“As a born and raised Alaskan Native (Tsimshian), my primary interest is Anthropology. The focus of my undergraduate research here at UAS has been the study of contemporary uses and benefits of traditional foods as well as the impact of subsistence hunting, fishing, and harvesting laws on Alaska Native populations.” — Forest Haven

Forest Haven is the 2013 Commencement Student Speaker because of her outstanding academic scholarship, research, and professional work at UAS.  She received an Associate of Arts degree from the Ketchikan campus and then transferred to the Juneau campus to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in the Social Sciences.  Her grade point average is 3.99.

Forest was awarded an EPSCoR, Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research undergraduate research grant from the National Science Foundation. She has been extensively involved in archaeological fieldwork around southern Southeast Alaska and presented three professional academic research papers.

According to her academic mentors, Forest’s classroom work, analytical and research skills are exceptional. She quickly grasps theoretical perspectives, easily relates these ideas to practical issues, and shares her knowledge and understanding of the subject matter by helping other students.

In the past two years Forest has assisted the Social Science program as a Teaching Assistant for multiple classes. She is a mentor and role model to many students at UAS.

Her post-graduation plans include fishing, hunting, and pursuing a PhD. in Anthropology.

UAS' 2013 Juneau Commencement will be held May 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the UAS Recreation Center.
