Samantha Becker: 2013 Outstanding Graduate — Geography
"As a student Sammy Becker is truly outstanding, responsible, competent, an independent and sharp thinker, a phenomenal example of the ideal geography and environmental studies student. She is a critical thinker about justice, gender, tourism, adventure, history -- a wonderful student to work with on so many fronts." -Arts and Sciences nominating committee
I was born and raised near Anchorage, Alaska and decided to come to UAS in a new and different region of Alaska. Since my first year I have completed two major expeditions on Mt. Denali and in Ecuador, along with being present on nearly every Outdoor Studies outing since 2009. Although most of my time here feels as though it was spent in the rainy Juneau backcountry, I feel proud to have expanded my interests and was published in this year’s Tidal Echoes literary journal.
I don’t think the combination of academics and leisure through the ODS program would have been possible at any other school, and I am convinced that it is the core of my success. I hope to continue to critically evaluate the connections between geographic location, identity, and the natural world as I embark on a several month long bike tour this fall!
