Admission Requirements
- Completed graduate application and $60 processing fee.
- An official transcript indicating baccalaureate degree and a GPA of 3.0.
- Two letters of recommendation on SOE form.
- A writing sample consisting of three individual pieces: 1) a statement of professional objectives, 2) a sample of academic, work-related or other writing, and 3) an impromptu writing sample.
- Evidence of successful experience with children in an elementary setting. Experienced applicants should submit a letter from a supervisor. Applicants new to education may complete a one week, SOE-approved classroom experience as a volunteer teacher's aide in a public or private school setting, resulting in an evaluation by the host teacher or principal.
- Qualifying scores on the Praxis I test which is a requirement from the State of Alaska for the Initial Type A Teaching Certificate. Visit the Praxis website for more information on registering and taking the Praxis I test.
Fall semester student teaching requires formal application by March 15 of the previous spring semester. Spring semester student teaching requires formal application by October 1.
Minimum credit hours required for the program are 42. The total credit hours must include 9 approved education credits earned at UAS. Student teaching must be completed while enrolled at UAS. To successfully complete the program, students must pass all three sections of the Praxis I exam and Praxis II content exams at state approved levels.
