The One-Year MAT Elementary Juneau / Ketchikan / Sitka program has four distinct phases:

See also UAS Academic Requirements for the MAT Elementary-Juneau program for program description and list of degree requirements.

Phase One: A seven-week summer session conducted before the public schools open in the fall (July - August) on campus in Juneau.

Phases Two and Three: During the public school year (end of August through the end of May), the MAT students serve as interns with a team of two teachers, one primary and one intermediate. Internships are available in middle school for those who are interested. In the fall semester interns will be at their assigned school three full days a week and take coursework on campus two full days a week plus one evening. In the spring semester interns will be at their assigned schools four full days a week and take coursework on campus one full day a week plus one evening.  Distance students will attend classes via the web or audio conference.

Phase Four: A one-month summer session on campus in Juneau that will draw on students' recent experiences and extend their professional knowledge.

At the end of Phase Four interns will have completed all the coursework required for the MAT. To complete the degree requirements students must:

  1. Pass a Master's Portfolio that provides evidence that the student meets all program goals and outcomes,
  2. Praxis I exam scores meeting Alaska cut scores,
  3. Praxis II exam scores meeting Alaska cut scores, and
  4. 3.0 GPA.

Upon completion of all degree requirements students will be eligible for an Alaska Initial Teaching Certificate.

Tuition: The One-Year MAT Elementary Juneau / Ketchikan / Sitka program comprises 40 graduate semester hours of credit. Effective with the 2010-2011 academic year, applicants who intend to remain in Alaska to teach and come to UAS from out of state will no longer qualify for Alaska resident tuition during the second half of the MAT program.

To receive Alaska resident tuition rates you must be able to prove one of the following:

  1. The applicant has been physically in Alaska for two years (apart from documented illnesses, vacations, attending another educational institution while maintaining Alaska residency or other absences not exceeding 120 days in a two year period).
  2. The applicant received or has been qualified to receive the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend within the past 12 months.
  3. The applicant is a dependent child of an Alaskan resident (as defined above)

For an explanation of the program in an outline form, refer to the MAT Timeline.

This is an intensive, immersion-type program with high quality learning experiences in coursework and internship. It is designed to provide future educators with an up-to-date professional preparation through innovative approaches.
