The MAT Elementary-Juneau program has four distinct phases
See also UAS Academic Requirements for the MAT Elementary-Juneau program for program description and list of degree requirements.
Phase One: A seven-week summer session conducted before the public schools open in the fall (July - August).
Phases Two and Three: During the public school year (end of August through the end of May), the MAT students serve as interns with a team of two teachers, one primary and one intermediate. Internships are available in middle school for those who are interested. In the fall semester interns will be at their assigned school three full days a week and take coursework on campus two full days a week plus one evening. In the spring semester interns will be at their assigned schools four full days a week and take coursework on campus one full day a week plus one evening
Phase Four: A one-month summer session that will draw on students' recent experiences and extend their professional knowledge.
At the end of Phase Four interns will have completed all the coursework required for the MAT. To complete the degree requirements students must:
- Pass a Master's Portfolio that provides evidence that the student meets all program goals and outcomes,
- Praxis I exam scores meeting Alaska cut scores,
- Praxis II exam scores meeting Alaska cut scores, and
- 3.0 GPA.
Upon completion of all degree requirements students will be eligible for an Alaska Initial Teaching Certificate.
