Admission Requirements

  1. Contact Dr. Katy Spangler (907-694-7019) to set up an advising session.
  2. A graduate application for admission and a $60 processing fee.
  3. You may use the online application.
  4. Two letters of recommendation on SOE form.
  5. Official transcripts showing completion of a bachelor's degree with appropriate course content from an accredited institution. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required. Students in the elementary credential program who wish to apply to the MAT program should have a 3.0 GPA in the coursework taken for the credential program.
  6. Evidence of successful experience with children in an elementary setting. Experienced applicants should submit a letter from a supervisor. Applicants new to education may complete a one week, SOE-approved classroom experience as a volunteer teacher's aide in a public or private school setting, resulting in an evaluation by the host teacher or principal.
  7. Competency in written communication as measured by submission of an admissions writing sample.
  8. Letter of support from local school district administration.
  9. Qualifying scores on the Praxis I test, which is a requirement from the State of Alaska for the Initial Teaching Credential. For more information, visit the Educational Testing Service website.
