PRAXIS I
You must take the Praxis I to be fully admitted to the M.A.T. program. If you are not able to take the test prior to the application deadline or if you fail one or more sections, you may be conditionally admitted into the program. You must pass with scores that meets the Alaska State requirements for teacher certification prior to graduating from the program.
This exam assesses basic knowledge in reading, writing and math. There are two versions of the Praxis: the paper based professional skills test (PPST) and the computer-based test (CBT). Either version is acceptable. Before taking Praxis, you are strongly encouraged to get Tests at a Glance free from Education Testing Services (ETS) or other commercial publications for review and practice.

Passing scores for Praxis I tests in reading, writing, and mathematics must be on file in Teacher Certification (Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development) prior to submitting an Initial teacher application to the State Department of Education. Test scores must be sent to the teacher certification office (Code R7027) directly from Education Testing Services.

An average score of 174 with no score less than 172 on each of the reading, writing, and math sections is also considered a passing score on the Praxis I exam.
If any of your scores are lower, you will need to retake that segment of the test. For this reason, plan to take the test at the earliest date possible.

Passing scores for the WEST-B exam must be submitted with the application for Initial teacher certification. Applicants must submit an original Examinee Score Report showing passing scores on all three sections of the exam.

Qualifying scores for the State of Alaska
Passing scores from any of these three exams (Praxis I, CBEST, WEST-B) may be submitted to meet the testing requirement for teacher certification in Alaska. Scores from the three exams may not be combined to form a set of passing scores. You must have passing scores from all sections of ONE of the three approved exams.
