Students in this course will learn about Alaska's post-secondary crises. In order to grow Alaska's 21st century economy, the need for a highly educated and trained work force is crucial. To meet this demand the Alaska Postsecondary Access and Completion Network recommends that 65% of our state's working-age adults must attain a post-secondary degree or training by the year 2025. Students will be exposed to current best practices and programs that will address this critical need by fully attending and participating in Alaska Can Conference 2016.

The purpose of the course is to provide participants with examples of 21st century media integration in either traditional or nontraditional classroom situations in order to bolster student engagement and learning and facilitate concept retention by bringing the student closer to their current technological lives within a rigorous educational environment. New interactive media developed largely in the past decade represent a vital opportunity to leverage children's interests to expand their skills and knowledge. Advances in brain research clearly point to engagement as a key factor in learning. Evidence suggests that kids today have different brains because of two simple facts: 1.) The brain changes as a result of experience, and 2.) Experiences are different for today's kids contrasted with those of two decades ago (Introduction to Brain Compatible Learning, Jensen 2007).
