Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is given to students based upon their level of enrollment and Expected Family Contribution (EFC). If awarded, an eligible student can receive the same Pell Grant at any university. Click here for more information on the Federal Pell Grant.
- For the 2016-2017 academic year, awards range up to $5815.
- Awards are based on a combination of EFC and level of enrollment:
- EFC range of 0-5234.
- Levels of awards for full-time, three-quarter-time, half-time, or less-than-halftime enrollment; minimum enrollment is 1 credit hour per semester but some students may not receive the award if only in one credit please contact Financial Aid Office for questions.
- Eligibility is based upon the number of enrolled hours at the time of the end of Census Day.
- A student must be pursuing their first undergraduate degree.
- A FAFSA must be filed.
- The Federal Pell Grant is a need-based award and thus counts towards fulfilling a student’s overall need figure.
- Must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress
Pell Lifetime Eligibility Restrictions and Processing
Students earn up to 100% of their annual limit each year based on their enrollment level.
Each student has a maximum Lifetime Eligibility of 600%, which roughly translates into 6 years worth of full time awards.
Students are informed of the percentage of their Lifetime Eligibility used each year on their Student Aid Report (SAR) which they receive by completing the FAFSA.
Students with a Lifetime Eligibility limit of greater than 500% may experience a delay in Financial Aid disbursement at the beginning of each semester. This is due to the necessity of the Financial Aid Office to match your Pell Award to your Enrollment Status. As students can adjust their enrollment until the 100% refund date, aid cannot be disbursed until student enrollment is locked for students utilizing their last year of Pell Eligibility.
Student's who's Pell Lifetime Eligibility is at or above 600%, cannot receive future Pell Grant funding.

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is a campus-based grant. This means that federal funds are provided to individual universities to administer at their discretion (within federally governed parameters). Funds for the Federal SEOG program are limited. - A student must have an EFC of 0.
- A student must be receiving a Pell Grant (and thus be working on their first undergraduate degree).
- A student must be enrolled at least half time.
- The FAFSA must be filed.
- The Federal SEOG is a need-based award and thus counts towards fulfilling a student’s overall need figure.
This Grant is called Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant also know as the TEACH Grant. The School of Education Graduate Students and the Special Education Undergradute Bachelor Degree Students are eligible to apply.
In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant.
IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) was disbursed.
Note: TEACH Grant recipients will be given a 6-month grace period prior to entering repayment if a TEACH Grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.
Important Reminder: All Teach Grants will be processed after the census date (same date as the Deadline for 100% Tuition and Fees Refund for Full-Term Classes) each semester.
Eligibility Requirements and Steps to Obtain the TEACH Grant Each Year:
- Complete the FAFSA
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- Be admitted into an approved UAS Graduate Program (see list below)
- Have a 3.25 cumulative GPA from your bachelor's degree OR
- Score above the 75th percentile on a college admissions test
- Complete the following:
Once all required documentation has been received, the Financial Aid Office will review and process the documents, please allow up to 10 business days to finish this process.
It will be your responsibility to log in to UAOnline and accept all or a portion of your award.

Fulfill the Teaching Obligation Outlined in the Agreement to Serve:
- Teach in a high-need subject area for at least four years
- Serve as a Full-Time teacher for a total of at least four academic years within 8 calendar years after you completed the program you received the TEACH grant
- Be classified as a highly qualified teacher at a low-income school.

University of Alaska (UA) Grant
- Alaska resident
- Admitted to a Degree or Certification Program
- Must have completed the FAFSA
- Enrolled in at least 6 or more credits
- Completed less than 60 credits towards their undergraduate degree
- Maintaining academic eligibility as defined by the financial aid office policy of satisfactory academic progress
- Need based
- Varies, capped at a maximum of $1,000
As with any aid, the campus the student is admitted to will offer and disburse the UA Grant as long as the student is eligible and if there are funds remaining.
Alaska Education Grant
The AEG is a need-based program funded by the Alaska Student Loan Corporation. Grant awards range from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $2,000 per academic year.
All Alaska residents who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and are attending an Alaska university, will be considered as having applied for this grant. Applicants will be prioritized based on financial need. For further information, please visit the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education's website: acpe.alaska.gov.
- Alaska resident and U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
- High school diploma or GED
- Admitted into an undergraduate degree or vocational certificate program at a qualifying institution in the state of Alaska

- Not have earned a baccalaureate degree
- Meet satisfactory academic progress standards
- Eligible for federal Title IV aid
The Edward and Anna Range Schmidt
The Edward and Anna Range Schmidt Charitable Trust was established in 1993 to encourage and assist promising students to pursue education in the sciences, particularly earth and environmental sciences. The primary focus of the Trust is to assist rural Alaskan Natives prepare for roles in the planning and control of the land and its natural resources and to aid them in becoming positive role models. The Trust is also interested in assisting promising minority students in Alaska.
Financial assistance from the Trust will be given to selected qualifying students who show academic and personal promise, but for reasons beyond their control or immediate solution, may have been bypassed by traditional support systems. This assistance is intended to aid the students obtain education, related internships, and other employment in Alaska, with Alaskan educational institutions and Alaskan employers. The Trust is not intended to provide traditional educational funding, such as scholarships or loans, but rather to provide financial assistance for immediate or short-term monetary aid. for further information please visit: http://schmidttrustalaska.org/
Students and programs in sciences, especially earth and environmental sciences, are eligible for grants. Alaska Natives and other minorities are strongly urged to apply.
Grants are awarded for a variety of expenses incurred by students. These may include internship support, travel and/or expenses related to workshops and science fairs, support needed to secure employment in science-related fields, or emergency needs.
Application may be made at any time. Requests are given immediate consideration.
Application should be made by letter from a Sponsor. A Sponsor may be a teacher, advisor, or other adult familiar with the grant applicant’s situation. The Sponsor’s letter should describe the grant applicant, the nature of the financial need, and amount of grant requested. The letter should also include the Sponsor’s and applicant’s telephone numbers and addresses. A letter from the applicant and/or other supporting material would be helpful.
