You are responsible for notifying this office of any changes to your enrollment.

We recommended that you contact the University of Alaska Southeast Disability Support Services Office to see if you qualify for any of their services. Some of these services include testing adjustments, note-takers, and much more. The Disability Support Services office is located in the Mourant Building. Please call 796-6000 if you have further questions.

All students who receive VA education benefits are required to maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. to meet minimum standards of progress. See the University of Alaska Southeast catalog for more information.

Tutoring is available through The Learning Center. However if you need more than one hour of tutoring per subject per week in order to bring your course grade up to a "C" you may be eligible to have VA pay for additional tutoring. Contact this office for more information.

Education Information for All Students

University of Alaska Southeast offers Veteran's educational benefits to eligible veterans, reservists, and dependents for most courses. Benefits may be paid for courses that are required for the student's declared program of study on file in the University of Alaska Southeast financial aid Office some limitations apply. Students receiving benefits must be aware of and maintain satisfactory progress throughout their program of study in accordance with University of Alaska Southeast and VA Standards of Progress.

Matriculation Requirements

All students are required to have official transcripts from all prior colleges, universities, and training institutes on file within the first semester of attendance. In addition, students must complete the Matriculation process within 2 semesters which includes completing assessment in reading, English and math, and meeting with the University of Alaska Southeast Veterans Affairs academic counselor. New students must complete these requirements before the start of the first semester.

Benefit Coverage

Payment of benefits is based on the number of units in which a student is enrolled. When applying for VA benefits, students must declare a major. Benefits will be paid only for courses required for that degree. Once a satisfactory grade has been earned, Veterans may not repeat that course and receive benefits. Benefits are restricted on some types of courses such as: televised, independent study, field trips, short term, non-degree credit, and remedial courses. Students should always check with the University of Alaska Southeast Veterans Educational Services Office before registering for courses.

Unit Equivalency

VA converts credit earned during nonstandard quarters or semester to credit hour equivalents. VA makes the conversion, not the school. When enrollment periods overlaps, credit hour equivalents for the period of the overlap are combined.

The credit hour equivalency tables show training time for nonstandard length quarters and semesters. To determine the number of weeks:

  1. Count the number of days in the enrollment period (first day through the last day)
  2. Divide by 7.
  3. Disregard a remainder of 3 days or less and consider a remainder of 4 days or more a full week.

NOTE: remember not to confuse remainder of the days with the decimal places.

Use the chart below to find the Semester Hour Equivalency.

Hour Equivalency Key:

FT: Full Time

3/4: Three-Quarter Time

1/2: Half Time

1/4: One-Quarter Time
