Recently students might have noticed the construction that has been going on in the Mourant Café on what was the Fireweed Room.  What students might not know is that the remodel of the Fireweed Room is just the beginning of the changes planned for the cafeteria.

Over the past two weeks walls have gone up and down, plastic has been placed where walls were and the cafeteria has been twice as loud as usual.

Project manager Ke Mell, says this is just the beginning of the changes planned to occur prior to and during spring break set for March 15th through the 22nd.  “We have been given directive by the administration to invest more money to make Mourant more attractive to students.”

According to Russ Carson, the electrician working on the Fireweed renovations, the room was only remodeled about a year and a half ago.  “One part of the room will be for storage, one part will probably be vending machines and the final part of the room will be a meeting room.”

Mell explained the further changes expected for the Fireweed Room.  “We’ve changed the Fireweed Room into basically a small room for meetings with electrical outlets for possible appliances such as vending machines.  We should be finished with the Fireweed Room in and around spring break, but there are a few loose ends to tie up.”

Mell also said that in addition to the renovations in the Fireweed Room, the Lake Room and the cafeteria will also be receiving small face-lifts. “We are going to take the wall out separating the Lake Room from the main cafeteria between now and spring break.  Also, we are planning on replacing the carpet in the cafeteria and Lake Room.”

If students are interested in find out what else is new in the Mourant Café and with Dinning Services there will be a meeting March 4th at 6:00 pm at the Housing Lodge.  Students will be able to meet the new Food Service Manager Carol Young and discuss what else is new with UAS Vice Chancellor Bruce Gifford, UAS Housing Manager Chris Washko, and the Regional Food Service Manager Mark Jimmerson.  Free pizza will also be available.  Feel free to drop by and give your opinion.
