During the Spring 2011 semester, the UAS Ketchikan campus sponsored a One Ketchikan One Book project. All of Ketchikan was encouraged to read one book, The Soloist, by author Steve Lopez, and to join in related events, which began on December 3, 2010, with the opening kick-off, and took place through early May 2011.
The events are listed below and included three book discussion groups, live music on several occasions, a showing of the film, The Soloist, followed by a discussion, dramatic events, and a roundtable discussion concerning mental health and homelessness.
One Ketchikan One Book Events:A Book Discussion was held on January 12, 2011, in the Campus Library and was lead by Campus Librarian Kathleen Wiechelman.
A roundtable discussion was held on Wednesday, March 16th, 2011, beginning at noon in the Campus Library, which focused on homelessness and mental health issues. Panelists included Dr. William Urquhart, Assistant Professor of Sociology, UAS Ketchikan; Alan Bailey, Borough Assembly member and retired from the Department of Corrections; James and Eileen Halverson, Majors, Salvation Army; John Baratki, Director, First City Homeless Services; Dr. Lynn Caldwell, Psychologist, private practice; and Lisa Scarborough, Director, Love, INC.
A Book Discussion was held on Friday, March 25, 2011 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the Campus Library, and was lead by community member Cathy Cooley, volunteer on statewide mental health boards.
A Book Discussion was held on Monday, April 11, 2011, beginning at noon, in the Campus Library, and was lead by UAS Ketchikan Associate Professor of English Rod Landis.
A Finale Event was held on Thursday, April 28, 2011, in the Campus Library. We celebrated the gains made through reading and discussing the story of Nathaniel Anthony Ayers and Steve Lopez. Faculty member Dale Miller provided some excellent live music!
