The Testing Center can proctor exams for our local and distance University of Alaska courses as well as courses from other university systems. We proctor placement exams via Compass or Accuplacer and CLEP or DSST (Dantes) exams for those students who feel they have the knowledge to challenge a course. We also offer GED prep and testing.
Use the following guidelines for proctored exams:
- It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements for testing materials to be sent to UAS Ketchikan campus.
- Exams will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be completed during regular Testing Center hours.
- Due to limited space, appointments can be made after testing materials are received.
- If you need special accommodations please make sure you have done that prior to testing.
- Students are responsible for return mailing costs, unless prepaid mailing labels are provided.
We will complete and sign Proctor Forms when necessary; or if you need our contact information for submission, list the information as described below.
Please contact us at (907) 228-4524 for appointment information. Some examinations are provided for a fee; check our testing fees for more information.

Instructors can allow students who need special accommodations to take exams at the Testing Center, including make-up exams and exams that, for one reason or another, cannot be administered in class. Instructors interested in using this service should contact the Testing Center about a week in advance of the test date, fill out a Proctored Examination Request Form, and email or drop off exams with the form to the Testing Center.
Students enrolled in distance education programs typically need to take supervised exams, and thus need to set up these exams with a local proctoring center, such as ourselves.
To make The UAS Testing Center your distance test proctor, you must make arrangements with the campus that is offering the course. Here is the information to give them:

UA Distance Sites
The UAS Ketchikan campus requires that all new students who are degree seeking or planning to enroll in six credits or more take our placement assessments before enrolling in any UAS courses. The testing requirement will be waived for transfer students who provide transcripts for previous college work. Placement results will indicate the starting level for students and may require specific courses as prerequisites to college-level work.
The battery of mathematics and English computer placement tests can take up to three hours to complete. They do not all have to be completed in one sitting; however, you must complete the essay portion in one sitting. Math and English assessment is conducted with a computer-based program called ACCUPLACER. A hand-written essay completes the English assessment.
Retake policy: Students cannot retake the writing assessment for one year, and they may only retake the math assessment once within one year. Tests may not be used to skip courses in a sequence.
There is a CIS computer placement test available that allows a student with advanced computer skills to waive CIS 105 as a pre-requisite to taking higher level CIS courses. Students must complete four computer activities in one hour and 45 minutes with a score of 70% or higher to waive CIS 105.
Students who would like to have test results forwarded to another school should provide school contact information, including address, phone number, and fax number. Students will also be asked to sign a Release of Results form which grants us permission to distribute placement results (under 18 requires parental signature).
We currently conduct our placements using ACCUPLACER
UAS Ketchikan policy states that new students who are degree seeking or planning to enroll in six or more credits must complete placement assessments before enrolling in any UAS courses. Testing requirements are waived for transfer students who provide transcripts for college work in math and/or English. Placement results will indicate the starting level for students, and may require specific courses as pre-requisites to college-level courses. Tests may not be used to skip courses in a sequence.
A placement test is designed to measure a person's current skill level in specific subject and determines the most appropriate course(s) to take. At UAS, we use ACCUPLACER, a computer program, to determine placement in English and math courses.
Familiarizing yourself with the information that will be covered in the placement tests is smart. Sample questions for the Math, Reading, and Writing Skills tests can be found at www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/accuplacer. There is also an Accuplacer app available. An overview of the testing software as well as Math and English review sites are available on the UAS Ketchikan Tutoring webpage.
Allow at approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours to complete the tests.
ACCUPLACER administers several groups of tests: one for math and three for English (reading comprehension, editing, and an essay). The program is adaptive, which means the kinds of problems you will see and how many problems you will work on depend on how you respond.
The math, reading, and editing sections of the test are not timed. In general, the more knowledgeable you are, the more items will be presented and the longer the test will take. The time for each section--reading, editing, math--averages around 45 minutes, but can take more or less time. The essay portion of the assessment is also untimed and may take as long as an hour or more.
Students who are well versed in computers may want to take higher level computer courses and waive the basic CIS 105 course. Computer skills can be assessed with a 105 minute online placement exam. The exam consists of a set of four computer activities. Scores are available after 3 business days. You must receive a score of 80% or higher in order to waive CIS 105.
No. If all you require is a math or an English placement, then inform the test proctor.
No. It is not necessary to take all sections in one day. If your schedule does not permit you the suggested time needed, then inform the testing center that you are taking only one of the sections and plan to return on another day to take the remainder of the test.
The Testing Center is located at UAS Ketchikan campus, on the first floor of the Paul Building.
Know or bring your social security number and photo identification. We will provide all materials.
The fee for English only is $10, Math only is $5, and combined English and Math is $15. The CIS placement fee is $10.
No. This is an assessment tool that helps UAS advisors place you in appropriate courses so you can succeed. It will not determine whether or not you can take classes, only which ones are appropriate for you to begin with.
Test results are usually available immediately. Occasionally essay results are delayed up to 48 hours. To ensure confidentiality, testing results are not released over the phone.
Appointments are requested. Contact the Testing Center to schedule a time: 228-4524.
This decision is made on a case-by-case basis. Generally, scores from COMPASS or ASSET can be evaluated for placement at UAS Ketchikan. Often, however, additional testing is required. Contact the Learning Center or the Student Resource Center for more information.
Math placement scores are good for one year; English placement scores are good for two years. One retake per year is allowed.
I have taken SATs. Must I still take the UAS Placement Test?
In most cases, yes. Students who score 620 or higher on the SAT verbal should contact the Student Resource Center for exemption guidelines.
