IL Standard 1.2 Student understands the characteristics of and recognizes primary, secondary, and tertiary resources in the geological sciences

Knows that there are resources written for the layperson, others for study by geology students, and others only understood by professional geologists.

Understands that books, articles, and reports are written for different audiences, with research literature being published in scholarly journals and technical reports; major findings, overviews of research, and key concepts appear in books.

Understands that primary literature provides methods, results, and conclusions from field or laboratory observations/experiments so that others may replicate; secondary literature reports on research; tertiary literature provides overviews.

Characterizes geological literature by analyzing its content and format; recognizes the intended audience and understands its authors’ purpose in adopting a publication format.
