The word "documentary" derives its etymology from the Latin word docere, a term that signifies two meanings at once: to teach, and to admonish or warn. Accordingly, the documentary often imagines itself in productive relation to social change, particularly as it pertains to race, class, gender, and sexuality. This course will revisit the history of this tradition, as well as the methods by which reality has been composed in various visual styles. In doing so, this course will focus on a broad range of documentary and educational concerns including the myth of objectivity, author-subject relationships, documentary aesthetics, ethics of representation, reality/fiction dialectic, and the impact of technological innovations on art. Our subject matter will thus be relevant and hold consequences to the central concerns of a variety of disciplines including geography, anthropology, sociology, literature, art, and communications.
