If you work at a harbor or marina, customers are the reason for your business. Great customer service skills strengthen your ability to communicate successfully with harbor customers, local, state, and national agencies doing business with your harbor, as well as other stakeholders interested in your harbor’s activities.

This course will improve your customer service skills and help you grow your customer base. Students will learn proven techniques to ascertain what customers want and need so that harbor staff can fine tune operations to meet these expectations. The course highlights ways to know what your competition is doing and methods to stay abreast of industry standards.

This course is part of the Career Training for Ports and Marinas series. Requirements for class: Must have a computer with internet access, speakers OR headphones, personal email address, Adobe Reader Flash Player.

Giuseppe Alvarado credits his first lessons to the street smarts he learned growing up inside the city limits of Chicago: stay close to home, there's strength in numbers, and never talk or listen to strangers. After moving to Washington, he learned more from farm work, being a millwright apprentice and many other jobs before working as Wharfinger for Port of Bellingham's Squalicum Harbor.

For the past nineteen years, Giuseppe has served as the Pacific Northwest's boating public operator and manages the Port of Seattle's recreational boating marinas - Shilshole Bay Marina, Bell Harbor Marina, and Harbor Island Marina. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA) and on the Board of Directors for the Pacific Coast Congress of Harbormasters and Port Managers (PCC). He leads the Marina Committee and serves on the Grow Boating Committee for NMTA. He also serves on the Training and Education Committee for PCC.

As a PCC board member, Giuseppe has long been an advocate for the development of the online courses that comprise the Career Training for Ports and Marinas program. He was one of the content experts for the creation of the Customer Service for Ports and Marinas online class.
