The University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka Campus Fisheries Technology Certificate program provides practical skills and knowledge to students considering careers in fisheries technology.
The program offers two different areas of emphasis:
- Fish Culture - introduces students to the principles, concepts and methods used in the production of Pacific Salmon with an emphasis on modern fish culture techniques use by Alaskan producers.
- Fisheries Management - introduces students to common sampling and monitoring techniques and parameters utilized by fish technicians in southeast Alaska including the management, law and economics of fisheries.
Students can choose to complete the certificate with either emphasis. Both require three credit hours of internship.
This certificate online course work integrates with the A.A.S. in Fisheries Technology program.
This program requires 32 credit hours of course work:
- For the 11 credits hours of General Education Requirements (GERs), refer to the most current UAS academic catalog
- Fisheries in Southeast Alaska
- Fundamentals of Fisheries Biology
- Fisheries Technology Internship
- Fundamentals of Fisheries Oceanography or Introduction to Limnology
Fish Culture Emphasis includes:
- Fin Fish Culture I
- Fin Fish Culture II
- Using Spreadsheets in the Workplace or Using Databases in the Workplace
- Skiff Operator or Outboard Motor Maintenance

The Fisheries Technology Certificate requires completion of English S111 and Math S105.
Placement test scores determine where students start in Math and English courses.
We recommend you take your placement tests in advance to assess your abilities. Knowing your English and Math skill levels is an important part of selecting the right courses for your choice of study.
