SGA accomplishments and activities 2011-2012
SGA Scholarships - SGA received lots of applications for its four $500 scholarships for Spring 2012. The four recipients were Brenna Cliver, Izabela Pontual, Erika Apathy, and Lexi Fish.
Art Club - SGA chartered the Art Club and donated $500 as seed money to get the club going. Art Professor Liz Zacher will serve as the Art Club advisor. The purpose of the club is to promote the study and creation of art, to host art shows, and to provide students with social opportunities involving art and artists.
New UAS Merchandise - SGA purchased a major influx of UAS-wear, including cool t-shirts with a raven hand-drawn by UAS-staffer Van Hanson, flash drives, shot glasses, and antenna balls—very popular.
Budget Revision - success! With much effort from super SGA Treasurer Kristy Crews, SGA was able to get a budget increase for the remainder of the 2011-2012 year, which allows SGA to compensate its new officers, purchase video equipment to put Sitka events online for e-Learning students, among other new initiatives.
Ratification of the UAS Constitution - The revised "Constitution of the United Students of University of Alaska Southeast Campus" was ratified with 100% of votes cast in favor of ratification. Read the Constitution and let us know!! Send your comments to sitka.studentgov@uas.alaska.eduElections – In April of 2011 we gained a President, Ed Sugai, and a secretary, Cynthia Fisher. Then in October the UAS-Sitka student body voted Anna Quinn as Vice President, Kristy Crews as Treasurer and Arlo Davis as Public Relations Officer. In January 2012 Naomi Jones joined SGA as Representative at Large.
Retreat – SGA hosted a 2-Day Retreat on August 26-27, 2011 with the following attendees: Ed Sugai, Cynthia Fisher, Emy Roles (staff advisor), and April Susky (staff advisor). The purpose of the retreat was to plan initiatives for 2011-12.
Fall Welcome to UAS Cookout – SGA footed the bill for a successful BBQ on Sept. 9, 2011 that drew in many community members in addition to potential members of SGA.
Alaska Day Parade/Float – On Oct. 18, 2011 SGA members decorated a truck and dressed up as UAS Graduates in the 2011 Alaska Day parade, which happened in the pouring rain. It seemed like the whole town was there, either watching or in the parade itself! It’s amazing how quickly $200 in candy can disappear when your float is being mobbed by children!
New UAS-Sitka SGA Constitution Ratified in November, 2011—the new constitution adds a Public Relations Officer to lead publicity efforts for SGA. Other new provisions include pay for SGA officers, a clarification of the role of SGA advisors, the creation of the Student Activities Committee as a standing committee charged with promoting and overseeing student clubs.
Turkey Feast—SGA bought three turkeys for a Thanksgiving Potluck on Nov. 17, 2011 for students, faculty, and staff at UAS.
Christmas Bazaar—SGA and the Art Club had a table at the annual Christmas Bazaar in Sitka.
SGA hosted a Q & A session with Alaska State Representative Peggy Wilson on Dec. 5, 2011. The event was available via teleconference to all UAS students. Topics included funding for UAS, rising tuitions, and Alaskan economic opportunities in future.
Christmas Tree Decorating—It was only a week before the campus would close for Christmas, but we figured better late than never!
