Hayes Presents in Nome
UAS English faculty and author Ernestine Hayes recently visited Nome schools, encouraging elementary, junior high, and high school students to continue their education and to write their stories.
“I delivered a comcast to elementary students on oral tradition as it relates to creative writing,” writes Hayes. “I presented a lecture/reading titled ‘What Shall We Do With Our Histories’ to the Nome community. I delivered a one-credit memoir class to Native and non-Native community members, working with them on how to tell their stories and encouraging them to pursue their education.
I traveled to Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island and spent two days working with elementary, junior high, and high school students, talking to them about writing and about publishing. I worked with individual community members in the evenings.”
