Several elders attended a reception for Alaska Native Languages & Studies held in honor of Kaajakwtí: Dr. Walter Soboleff on November 14, the birth anniversary of the Tlingit scholar, elder and religious leader who passed on in 2011 at the age of 102. It was an opportunity to learn about the new Alaska Native Language & Studies program. Elders praised program director Lance Twitchell in Tlingit and English. They thanked him for inspiring and encouraging young people to study Alaska Native languages at UAS. "You have heeded the call from Dr. Soboleff," said one elder.
