07-16-19 Message to UAS students
Dear UAS students:
As UAS Chancellor I want you to know that our university is open for business and is focused on your success as a student. Summer classes are in full swing and we’re gearing up for fall semester classes that start on August 26. We have every expectation that UAS classes will go forward as planned for the fall. And we just received the very positive news that UAS’ accreditation was fully reaffirmed by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities.
Most of you know about the budget challenges facing the university, and continuing efforts by the legislature and university leaders to work with the governor on a sustainable path forward. Just yesterday, the UA Board of Regents met to consider declaring financial exigency for the UA system given this situation. However, the board postponed that action. The board will meet again on July 22 and July 30 to consider further action. We continue to hope that a satisfactory budget solution can be found as well as a reaffirmation of funding for APS/AEG student scholarships. I encourage you to continue sharing your views about the importance of a UAS education with legislators and the Governor.
As Chancellor, I realize that this continuing uncertainty about the university’s budget and the scholarship funding can be unsettling. I ask for your patience as we work through these challenges. If you have questions about registration or your classes, please reach out to us so that we can assist you---http://www.uas.alaska.
Your educational success is our foremost goal here at UAS. I commend you for pursuing your educational goals and look forward to celebrating your achievements in the future.
Sincerely,
Chancellor, University of Alaska Southeast--Áak’w Kwáan Aaní káx’
