Maritime & Multi-Skilled Worker

The UAS Ketchikan Maritime & Multi-Skilled Worker program is a series of courses that leads to the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Oiler Credential: “Qualified Member of the Engine Department" QMED.

Students in the MMSW Program:

Are in class Monday – Friday (8:00am – 5:00pm most days) for 12 weeks every fall semester
Benefit from hands-on training time along with technical knowledge
Learn the basics of
- Diesel mechanics maintenance & repair
- Hydraulics maintenance & repair
- Refrigeration maintenance & repair
- Welding
- Marine electrical maintenance & repair
Learn skills related to other industrial jobs in shipbuilding, heavy machinery, construction, physical plant operations, and welding.

The UAS Ketchikan Maritime & Multi Skilled Worker program is a United States Coast Guard approved class. This approval has significant advantages for seafarers seeking to upgrade their skills and credentials and for those seeking entry into the maritime field. Successful completion of the program allows a reduction in required sea service days from 180 to 120. Upon presentation of the required sea time at the Regional Exam Center, the USCG will issue the QMED/Oiler rating credential without any further testing.

Non-credit (Renewal) Courses

Basic Safety Training Refresher
The 24-hour Basic Safety Training Refresher is intended for Mariners who are renewing their credentials and lack 1 year of seatime in the past 5 years required to maintain recency of BST. Students are required to pass all written exams and physical proficiencies required for regular Basic Safety Training classes.
Drop-in Welding
Drop in time for practice projects. Three hours per session. Contact instructor at 907-228-4571 for additional information.
First Aid/CPR/ AED for the Mariner
This USCG approved class fulfills the First Aid/CPR/AED module of Basic Safety Training. Mariners will receive a USCG certificate of completion for the course as well as an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED card. Non mariners may take the class to receive the American Heart Association card.
On-line Radar Refresher
This course is approved by the USCG. It enables students to study the course material at home via personal computer and when ready, come in and take the test. Once the mariner has completed review of the course material, he/she can make an appointment to come in and take the test in Ketchikan by calling the Ketchikan Maritime Center at 228-4568 or emailing Neil Nickerson in Juneau at nlnickerson@alaska.edu. The final exam must be taken at UAS Ketchikan or UAS Juneau. It consists of a paper plot and a simulator exercise. Please take a minute to view our simulator capabilities and specifications
