Alaska’s 5th annual College Goal Sunday event will take place at 2pm on Sunday February 8th, 2009.  The Juneau site is the University of Alaska Southeast Student Recreation Center  in Auke Bay off the Back Loop road.

Traditionally offered a week or two after Super Bowl Sunday, College Goal SundaySM   is a national program designed to help students clear the financial hurdles to higher education, particularly low-income and first-generation college goers.

This year, twenty-four sites will be participating in the one-day event at which Alaska’s financial aid professionals join other volunteers in participating communities across the state.  Their give line-by-line assistance to families and students as they fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the universally required financial aid application.

“The FAFSA is the only way for students to access federal and most state financial support, including grants, scholarships and work-study opportunities. However, completing the form correctly with detailed income, tax, and other information can be a difficult task” said Teri LaGrand counselor at Unalaska High School.

Last year, more than 100 community volunteers and 80 financial aid experts from Alaska’s postsecondary institutions, school districts, state government, out-of-state partners, and even the IRS came together and assisted more than 500 FAFSA filers.
