Date of Press Release: April 30, 2024

The University of Alaska Southeast Commencement is an occasion to celebrate our students for their academic achievement, but also an opportunity to recognize community members for their outstanding service. This year, UAS will honor John Greely and Marla Berg with a Joint Meritorious Service Award for their many and wide ranging contributions to Juneau.

For more than 40 years, John and Marla have been instrumental in helping secure funding for essential services that have improved the lives of so many community members. John and Marla were foundational members of Juneau’s Meals on Wheels. John’s commitment to the community includes serving on the Association of Alaska School Boards and supporting Catholic Community Services.

Marla was a key member on the Glory Hole Board during the creation of the Juneau Housing First Collaborative, which serves chronically homeless and vulnerable people by providing permanent supportive housing. She was also a founding member of the 100 Women Who Care organization which has grown to over 3000 members, contributing over $30,000 to local nonprofits.

They have both led committees and organizations through numerous crises to ensure that Juneau's most vulnerable were not left behind. UAS Chancellor Aparna Palmer notes that “it is our honor at UAS to recognize these extraordinary individuals who have given their heart and soul to improving the lives of community members.”

John Greely and Marla Berg will be honored in person during the UAS Juneau Campus Commencement Ceremony on Sunday May 5th.

The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) uses the occasion of Commencement each year to recognize individuals in the community who have offered outstanding service to the university, the state of Alaska, and/or Southeast Alaskan communities. The UA Board of Regents approves candidates who are nominated by local campuses. This year, UAS will honor John Greely and Marla Berg with a Joint Meritorious Service Award, to be presented during the Juneau campus ceremony on Sunday May 5th, 2024.
