The Center for Mine Training at UAS is here to help put you to work in Alaska's mineral extraction and processing industry. As holding one of our nation's richest reserves of minerals, Alaska needs a strong, smart, and responsible workforce to fill these roles. Let us help you get in on the ground floor of a highly lucrative and in-demand career at UAS today.

  • High school students are encouraged to apply to take the Center for Mine Training's introductory course - "Introduction to Mining Occupations and Operations", which is held each Spring semester. With support and thanks to Hecla Greens Creek and Coeur Alaska Kensington, many students receive scholarship support each year, ensuring no cost for the interested student.  The course offers students a broad overview of Alaska's mining industry as presented firsthand by industry experts. This course also includes a field trip to an operating mine - students will see firsthand how minerals are industrially extracted from the ground, processed into useable products, and how mines proceed through reclamation to make sure the waste left behind is fully and responsibly accounted for.

  • Post-Secondary students and those already in the workforce interested in a career in mining are encouraged to enroll at UAS in the Applied Associate of Science degree or Occupational Endorsement certificate program, with an emphasis on Mine Mechanics. The Occupational Endorsement can be completed in as little as 1-year, while an Associate's Degree typically takes 2-years and includes courses in Writing, Math, and other General Education Requirements.

Students on track to complete either credential will receive a thorough and in-depth education regarding diesel mechanics as necessitated by industry standards across Alaska. Course topics will include diesel engines; hydraulics; electric; transmissions; brakes; welding and more. With support from Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company, 6 selected applicants will receive scholarship support each semester in support of their education. Selected applicants will also have the opportunity to serve as paid interns over the summer as students if selected by the mine. This scholarship is competitive, so apply early. Please see below for more information about degree programs and scholarships at the Center for Mine Training.
