Icebergs push back

Shortly before Jakobshavn Isbræ, a tidewater glacier in Greenland, calves massive chunks of ice into the ocean, there's a sudden change in the slushy collection of icebergs floating along the glacier's terminus, according to a new paper led by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU Boulder.

Tlingit author Ernestine Hayes named Rasmuson’s 2021 Distinguished Artist

The Rasmuson Foundation has named author Ernestine Saankaláxt’ Hayes of Juneau as its 2021 Distinguished Artist. The award honors lifetime achievement in creative fields and contribution to the state’s arts and culture, and comes with an award of $40,000. Hayes, who is Tlingit, is most widely known for “Blonde Indian, an Alaska Native Memoir,” published in 2006.

Opinion: We can’t run our businesses without the University of Alaska

University of Alaska alumni filling positions in local companies is just good business. In my company, Alaska Permanent Capital Management, 60% of our employees attended one or more of our universities in the UA system. Another Alaskan firm, R&M Consultants, recently told me that more than 50 percent of its employees are UA alums. Our companies are not unique. We rely on UA grads to power our workforce.
