New partnership between UAS and Coeur Alaska

According to the agreement, which was signed on February 13th, 2009, selected students who are successful in UAS’ Power Technology Diesel/Heavy Duty Emphasis program, will be given preferential entry into the workforce at Coeur Alaska’s Kensington Mine.

The UAS School of Career Education recently entered into a partnership with Coeur Alaska to provide entry level, heavy duty diesel mechanics to work at the Kensington Mine.  According to the agreement, which was signed on February 13th, 2009, selected students who are successful in UAS’ Power Technology Diesel/Heavy Duty Emphasis program, will be given preferential entry into the workforce at Coeur Alaska’s Kensington Mine.  "Coeur Alaska is excited about the opportunity to partner with theUniversity of Alaska Southeast School of Career Education Diesel Technology Program and enter into an agreement that may provide Southeast Alaska residents the opportunity to further their education and work at Kensington, following successful graduation in the program," says Coeur Alaska’s Human Resource Manager Meg Day.

Karen Schmitt, Dean of UAS’ School of Career Education says the partnership between UAS and Coeur Alaska “benefits our students by providing a direct linkage between the training in our diesel technology program and an entry-level, family-wage job in the mining industry at Kensington.”   Chuck Craig, Associate Professor of Diesel Technology and Program Head, agrees with Dean Schmitt saying “Anytime there is a partnership established between the university and an industry, the students are the real winners.”
