UAS Chunnel at Annual Mini-Golf Event

A collaboration of University of Alaska Southeast art and construction technology students, faculty and staff has resulted in a one of a kind installation at the second annual Hit the JACC Putt miniature golf course, "Around the World in 9 Holes.” The course opened Dec. 19 at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center.
According to an article in this week’s Capital City Weekly: Each hole is built by a local artist or team of artists, based on the "Around the World" theme. One such hole is being sponsored by UAS Construction Technology. Their hole is centered around the English Channel with France on one side and England on the other. Famous landmarks are included such as London's Big Ben and Paris' Eiffel Tower. Obstacles include French wine bottles, English ferries and shark fins. The construct is built with wood provided by UAS and consists of nine squares measuring four feet by four feet. This made for easy transport from the construction site downtown at the UAS Technical Education Center to the JACC.
“It is perhaps the most difficult hole there!” said UAS team member and art student Ariel Rolfe. “People always complain about how there is nothing to do in Juneau, but this winter break you can't say that because you can go play putt-putt at the JACC for only $5.”
"Around the World in 9 Holes" will be open from noon to 9 p.m. from Dec. 19 to Dec. 30, with the exception of Christmas Day. Hours will be extended on Dec. 26 for Black Light Night from 9 p.m. to midnight (with the Rendezvous serving alcoholic beverages). A Tee Party will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 27, at which time golfers are invited to wear a funny hat and enjoy tea and crumpets. Tickets are available for $5 per person, $50 for a party of up to 15 and $100 per hour for private parties.
“This was such a wonderful event for families last year!” said Juneau Arts and Humanities Council director Nancy DeCherney. “I am so excited that the UAS students are helping out: Thanks to that team, we will be going London to Paris through the Chunnel!”
