James Fallows is a national correspondent for The Atlantic and winner of the National Book Award. He will discuss his book, Postcards from Tomorrow Square, which covers China's economic explosion, environmental impact and the transition to democracy. Deborah Fallows is a linguist and China expert. She is the author of Dreaming in Chinese.October 29, 2012

Evening at Egan Friday Fall Lecture Series, “UAS in Cuba: A Semester-long search for Che, Hemingway, el Papa’, and the Authentic Tourist”
Students who spent their Spring 2012 UAS Semester in the fascinating country of Cuba will share vignettes and photographs from the unique experience. Last spring a dozen UAS students travelled to Cuba with four faculty members to hone their Spanish language skills, study the country’s rich cultural history, witness the impact of tourism on the island’s life ways, and contemplate the legacy of the famous American author, Ernest Hemingway, who spent a third of his life living near Havana.October 15, 2012

In collaboration with scientists from NOAA, UAS, UAF, and his students, Marine Biology faculty David Tallmon studies how sculpin and salmon in Auke Creek, Alaska, are adjusting and adapting to a changing environment. Juneau Icefield Lab, UAS Faculty Leads Fieldwork: Study on effects on food chain of fossil fuel remnants in glaciers
Dr. Eran Hood led the fieldwork at the Mendenhall and Herbert Glaciers where visiting scholar-scientists from throughout the Lower 48 sampled snow, ice melt, and glacier runoff. The organic carbon from these water and snow samples was isolated and carbon dated. “We analyzed its molecular chemical structure,” said Hood. “The carbon fingerprint we found indicated aerosols derived from the combustion of fossil fuels are an important source of organic matter on glacier surfaces and also in glacier outflow streams.”January 30, 2012

The University of Alaska Southeast is sorry to announce the cancellation of tonight’s presentation by researcher Jim Darling on whale songs.
