UAS Hosts Literature and Environment Symposium, June 14-17

The off-year event has drawn more than 135 attendees from several countries and continents, including Africa and China. Environment, Culture & Place in a Rapidly Changing North focuses on “the North” and the transnational perspective of this paradox, as well as a range of concerns, from peak oil and climate change to traditional ecological knowledge and tourism.

The UAS Juneau campus is hosting the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment conference June 14-17, 2012.  The off-year event has drawn more than 135 attendees from several countries and continents, including Africa and China.  Environment, Culture & Place in a Rapidly Changing North focuses on “the North” and the transnational perspective of this paradox, as well as a range of concerns, from peak oil and climate change to traditional ecological knowledge and tourism.

The symposium’s keynote speaker is Julie Cruikshank, Professor Emerita of Anthropology at University of British Columbia, and author of Do Glaciers Listen? Local Knowledge, Colonial Encounters and Social Imagination. Plenary speakers are Ellen Frankenstein, Ernestine Hayes and Nancy Lord.  Frankenstein will screen her documentary film, Eating Alaska,  Hayes, author of Blonde Indian, will do a reading from her current work as will Lord, who recently published Early Warming: Crisis and Response to the Climate-Changed North.
