Hecla Greens Creek establishes Environmental Science Scholarship at UAS

Starting in the coming academic year (Fall2013-Spring2014), the UAS Hecla Greens Creek Environmental Science Scholarship fund will award two $1,500 scholarships annually to qualified students enrolled in the Environmental Science degree program with Junior or Senior class standing.

Hecla Greens Creek has established a new scholarship program at the University of Alaska Southeast. Starting in the coming academic year (Fall2013-Spring2014), the UAS Hecla Greens Creek Environmental Science Scholarship fund will award two $1,500 scholarships annually to qualified students enrolled in the Environmental Science degree program with Junior or Senior class standing.  Interested students can apply using the standard UAS scholarship application available through UA Online (submit by February 15th).

UAS Chancellor John Pugh said, “This scholarship program is another example of Hecla Greens Creek’s commitment to environmental stewardship as part of their overall philosophy of responsible mining.  The scholarship program will help promising environmental science students complete their degrees, enabling them to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow who will work to develop our natural resources in a sustainable way.”

Hecla Mining Company was established in 1891 in northern Idaho’s Silver Valley and is today the largest silver producer in the United States. Hecla operates the Greens Creek mine on Admiralty Island and employs approximately 400 workers.
