First Friday at the REC- Spring 2013

With comfortable seating and a top notch lighting and sound system, the UAS REC is one of Juneau’s best kept secrets as a great facility for arts events.

For the first time this season, first Friday arts events are being held at the Charles Gamble Jr.-Donald Sperl Joint Use Facility, 12300 Mendenhall Loop Road also known as the UAS REC Center as part of the University of Alaska Southeast Sound and Motion Spring Arts series. Student art exhibit openings are part of the mix.

San Francisco singer-songwriter John Elliott kicked things off with a fantastic performance Feb. 1. His visit was sponsored by UAS Student Government.

The next event is a foreign film, brought to UAS in partnership with the Goldtown Theater. The Finger” (El Dedo), will be shown at 7p.m. on Friday, March 1. The film tells the story of Hidalgo, a slick and ingratiating scion eager for the new post of mayor of a remote village. Smelling a rat, Baldomero (a beloved natural leader with a habitually tapping digit) opposes him with his own candidacy—and soon turns up dead. The Global Film Initiative promotes cross-cultural understanding through the medium of cinema and supports the work of new and emerging film directors from around the world.

The final First Friday at the REC event of the season will be a concert by UAS student and singer songwriter Irene Muller and her band April 5 at 7 p.m. The group will feature original songs from Irene’s upcoming debut CD.
