Date of Press Release: July 22, 2016
University of Alaska Southeast Chancellor Dr. Rick Caulfield was appointed to serve as Vice Chair of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Presidential Committee on Teacher Education. The committee is charged with advising AASCU on initiatives in public policy, both federal and state, aimed at improving teacher education and improving credibility and integrity of university education programs nationwide.
Under the leadership of Chancellor Caulfield and his predecessors, the University of Alaska Southeast has been a leader in teacher education within the UA system for over 30 years. UAS produces a significant number of teachers annually--particularly through its Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. It also offers endorsement programs for new principals and superintendents. These accomplishments are especially noteworthy as the University of Alaska System evaluates its teacher education programs statewide through the UA Strategic Pathways process. Alaska continues to hire a majority of its teachers from out of state each year. Through Strategic Pathways, the UA system seeks to significantly increase the number of quality Alaska-educated teachers hired each year. Dr. Caulfield expects to contribute to this effort by highlighting Alaskan issues and concerns at the national level and also bringing insights about federal policy and national best-practices back to Alaska.
