The UAS School of Education was awarded a Margaret A. Cargill Foundation Teacher/Arts Education Grant in the amount of $478,000. Dean of the school Deborah Lo notes, “Teaching is challenging for both new and veteran teachers but too often new teachers report a lack of professional support and networks of peer mentors to share practice and encourage resilience while veteran teachers report the need for meaningful professional development within a framework that allows them to progress in the field and offer support to teacher candidates and new colleagues. The Margaret A. Cargill Foundation Grant will allow UAS to leverage partnerships with Sitka and Juneau school districts and our community partners to enrich and deepen the preparation Alaska teachers helping to ensure that they are competent and confident in integrated arts and culturally relevant pedagogy.”
