Date of Press Release: October 22, 2019
The annual fall lecture series Evening at Egan continues October 25 at the University of Alaska Southeast Auke Lake campus with UAS Professor of History Dr. Robin Walz’s presentation “The French Avengers”. His entertaining presentation will cover some of the outrageous exploits of criminals turned avengers found in popular French culture. These adventures are depicted in his recent book project Shady Detectives, Elegant Criminals and Dark Avengers: Popular French Heroes, 1815-1950.
Describing these crime fiction tales, Dr. Walz states “long before D.C. or Marvel comics, the French went crazy for avengers from the criminal wild side in serialized stories about the Count of Monte Cristo, Rocambole, and Chéri-Bibi.”
In addition to sharing his interests in history and popular culture through various lecture series, Dr. Walz teaches a variety of History and Humanities courses at UAS. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of California Davis, an M.A. in History from San Francisco State University, and a B.A. in History from Whitworth College in Washington. His expertise has allowed him to author and contribute to many publications regarding modern European intellectual history and the history of popular culture in modern France.
All Evening at Egan lectures are scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Egan Library and live-streamed on the UAS YouTube channel. View the full schedule for the lectures series. Presentations can be watched live or recorded on the UAS YouTube channel.
