UAS Evening at Egan presents Dr. Sol Neely on his 2019 journey along the Trail of Tears, November 1

His presentation, “Indigenous Cosmopolitanism: Being Cherokee in the Raven Bioregion”, will incorporate memoir, critical theory, story, and Indigenous philosophy in a conversation about the meaning of being Cherokee in the Raven Bioregion.

The annual fall lecture series Evening at Egan continues Friday, November 1 at the University of Alaska Southeast Auke Lake campus with Dr. Sol Neely, UAS Associate Professor of English. His presentation, “Indigenous Cosmopolitanism: Being Cherokee in the Raven Bioregion”, will incorporate memoir, critical theory, story, and Indigenous philosophy in a conversation about the meaning of being Cherokee in the Raven Bioregion.

Walking the Trail of Tears with his father and daughter, Dr. Neely said it provided an opportunity to “meditate on historical violence, transgenerational perseverance, memory, and repair.” His presentation will mark the beginning of National Native American Heritage Month at UAS.

Dr. Neely earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Literature from Purdue University and completed Cornell University’s School of Criticism and Theory “With Distinction.” He also holds degrees from the University of Alaska Anchorage in English and Philosophy. His specializations are in theory and cultural studies within literature and Native American studies.
