Dr. Cory Ortiz named UAS Dean of the School of Career & Technical Education

As Dean, he serves as the lead academic officer overseeing CTE faculty and staff and the Technical Education Center, located in Juneau.

The University of Alaska Southeast is pleased to announce that Dr. Cory Ortiz is the new Dean of the School of Career & Technical Education (CTE). Dr. Ortiz started working for UAS on June 19. As Dean, he serves as the lead academic officer overseeing CTE faculty and staff and the Technical Education Center, located in Juneau. He is part of a regional leadership team, working with campus directors in Ketchikan and Sitka to implement academic and workforce development programs that adhere to accreditation standards and support the regional mission of UAS. He will also work collaboratively with other campuses and schools within the University of Alaska System.

“Cory comes to UAS passionate about empowering students and fostering their career development," remarked Provost Maren Haavig, “I am thrilled that our students will benefit from his dedication to cultivating impactful learning environments and promoting successful transitions from academia to the professional world.”

Most recently, Dr. Ortiz worked for Utah State University as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Technology, Design, and Technical Education. He worked for various school districts in Utah, as a STEM specialist, work-based learning coordinator, and as an engineering teacher. He holds several degrees from Utah State University. He has a Doctor of Philosophy with a major of Career & Technical Education. He also has a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science, both in Technology and Engineering Education.

Dr. Ortiz is committed to fostering greater collaboration among all stakeholders of technical education in the Southeast while working to grow the existing and successful technical programs at UAS. On a personal note, Dr. Ortiz is moving from the Lower 48 to Juneau with his Alaska-born wife and two dogs, and he is excited about exploring all that Southeast Alaska has to offer.

The UAS School of Career & Technical Education serves approximately 500 students per semester, seeking associate degrees, undergraduate certificates, occupational endorsements, and workforce credentials in Applied Fisheries, Health Sciences, Construction Technology, Power Technology, Welding, Mining, Maritime, and Law Enforcement.
