Mitzi Bolaños Anderson appointed UAS Director of Equity & Compliance

UAS is pleased to announce the appointment of Mitzi Bolaños Anderson as the new Director of Equity and Compliance. Her responsibilities at UAS include Title IX, Equal Employment Opportunity issues, the American Disabilities Act/504 requirements, and Clery Act compliance.

The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mitzi Bolaños Anderson as the new Director of Equity and Compliance. Her responsibilities at UAS include Title IX, Equal Employment Opportunity issues, the American Disabilities Act/504 requirements, and Clery Act compliance.

Mitzi brings civil rights enforcement experience at the state and local levels in Alaska. She joined the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights as an Attorney and Mediator in 2017, then joined the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission as Staff Attorney and Executive Director in 2019. Mitzi comes to us most recently from the Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission, where she provided administrative leadership and oversight in the areas of civil rights investigations and community engagement.

Mitzi’s educational background is in Latin American Studies and International Law, with study abroad experiences in Brazil, Argentina, and Costa Rica. Mitzi also served as an AmeriCorps VISTA with First Alaskans Institute in Anchorage in 2015. She earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Florida International University College of Law in Miami. She earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Lewis & Clark Law School in their Animal Law program. She also has a graduate certificate from Florida International University in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and a graduate certificate from the Harvard University Extension School in Natural Resource Management and Sustainable Ecosystems.

Mitzi is passionate about each individual’s right to live, work, and learn in an environment free from discrimination and harassment, and is committed to education and prevention programs. UAS Chancellor Aparna Palmer remarked, “We are fortunate to have someone with the depth of experience that she has not only in the law and human rights but also someone who is dedicated to contributing to UAS and to the communities to which we belong.”
