Tidal Echoes 2025 Edition

Connection and community are the life threads of Southeast Alaska, and these Southeast Alaskan writers and artists capture it in this years Tidal Echoes where traditionally underserved and underrepresented voices are being elevated— giving voice to all of our collective communities.

The creation of Tidal Echoes is an amazing experiential learning opportunity for UAS students, from the solicitation of juried entries, through editing and production to a final printed book. Find out more about all our unique and immersive programs on our website.

Mark Sixbey

Mark Sixbey

Mark Sixbey is a Tsimshian artist born in 1980 to Peter and Ethel (Milne) Sixbey of Metlakatla, Alaska. He is Laxgyibu (Wolf clan) and "somewhat Swedish, by my father's immigrant grandparents." At 13 he joined Git Gyilhawlii, an inter-tribal Sm'algyax language dance group led by William (Joey) Bolton, a Tlingit-Tsimshian artist and educator. In school he studied formline design, painting, toolmaking and wood carving with Jack Hudson II at Annette Island School District from 1992-1998. He served active duty in the Marines from 2002-2006. Over the last 10 years Mark has taught Formline Design I & II, Woodcarving, Northwest Coast Art Theory & Practice and Carving-Toolmaking at University of Alaska Southeast-Sitka and Sitka School District, often in partnership with Sitka Tribe of Alaska's Cultural Resources Department. He married Liz Zacher in 2018. His favorite creative activities are crafting guitars and programming video games, two subjects he would like to eventually teach.

Corinna Cook

Corinna Cook is the author of Leavetakings, an essay collection. She is a former Fulbright Fellow, an Alaska Literary Award recipient, and a Rasmuson Foundation Individual Project awardee. She is currently funded by a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to write about the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission. Corinna serves as nonfiction faculty in Alaska Pacific University’s low-res MFA program in creative writing. More at corinnacook.com.

Annie Kessler is an English major with an emphasis in creative writing. She grew up in Ketchikan and now works at UAS on the Juneau campus. Her writing has been published in a variety of places, including Tidal Echoes, Alaska Women Speak, Cirque, and Creative Nonfiction. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, knitting, and walks in the woods.

Adonis Scalia (Junior editor)

Adonis “Don” Scalia is a junior at UAS currently pursuing a BS in Marine Biology and a minor in Creative Writing. They hail from the southern state of Mississippi, which has been hugely influential in their creative works. You can find them on campus as a friendly student tutor in the Writing Center. When they have free time, they like to spend it reading, playing video games, drawing, or writing. They are incredibly grateful to be a guest on Lingít Aaní, and for the love and support of family and friends. It wouldn’t be possible without you.

  • Juneau authors and artists: If your work is published in this edition, pick up your free copy at UAS Egan Library, starting Monday, April 7, 2025.
  • Artists and authors from other Southeast Alaska communities will receive their copies in the mail.
  • Visit one of the fabulous stores that support this project: Kindred Post (in store and online), Hearthside Books & ToysAlaska RoboticsJuneau-Douglas City MuseumParnassus Books in Ketchikan, Old Harbor Books in Sitka, The Bookstore in Haines, and Skagway News Depot & Books. Books should be on the shelves starting Saturday, April 5 in Juneau, and the following week in other Southeast Alaska communities. Books will also be available at the UAS Sitka Campus in the following weeks.
