2011 PNW MAA Annual Section Meeting
The 2011 Annual Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Section of the Mathematical Association of America will be held at the Auke Bay Campus of UAS in Juneau on June 23 - 25.
A meeting web page has been posted on the Mathematics Program Website. This web page will be updated as details become available. Confirmed invited speakers to date are Dr. David Bressoud of Macalester College and Dr. John Adam of Old Dominion University. Brief biographies of these and other invited speakers will be posted on the PNW MAA website. Of past graduates, what is known is that Dustin Raymond is wrapping up his Secondary School MAT at UAS, James Bauman is wrapping up Law School down South, Kevin Schriver has been working as a CAD Technician in Juneau and Micaela (formerly Ponce) who double-majored in biology and mathematics has begun an NSF Doctoral Fellowship with the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Center for the Study of Complex Systems at University of Michigan.
Auguste Stiehr has come back to to UAS after completing his MAT (from UAS) and has worked as the Math Specialist at the Learning Center while Nick Axmaker took time off from studies in the Spring to work at the Learning Center.
Past graduates, let us know where you are and what you are doing these days.
Our new faculty members, Andrzej and Megan, have been busy getting accustomed to life in Juneau and at UAS. Both attended the 2010 Joint Meeting of the Mathematical Sciences in San Francisco in January where Andrzej presented a talk in his research area.
Jill, Brian, Megan and Chris attended the 2010 PNW MAA Section meeting in Seattle in April where Megan presented a talk, “An introduction and analysis of birth-death probability models,” her area of interest. Megan was also awarded a PNW MAA Section NExT Fellowship for 2010 - 2011.
More recently, May 13 - 15, Megan went to "a pretty good" leadership conference in Sitka: "Emerging Leaders Dialogue", sponsored by The Institute of the North. The dialogue was directed toward young professionals in Alaska and included discussions of a variety of relevant topics in government, AK industry and sustainability, and education. She joined the group that discussed ways to improve the access to quality education, in particular for small remote villages, while maintaining the cultural ties and family responsibilities for the students and communities.
