Students who are active, engaged, and connected are more likely to understand and retain content.
Before Class Begins
You can increase student engagement before class even begins through your syllabus and early communications with students.
Syllabus
- Consider using a Liquid Syllabus (an interactive, web-based syllabus that can be adjusted as needed)
- Example of a Liquid Syllabus for LS 111
- Creating a Liquid Syllabus (self-paced online course that walks you through using Google Sites to create a liquid syllabus)
- Review your syllabus language - is it inclusive?
- Check your course site and materials for accessibility
Communication
- Send out a welcome email before class, letting students know what they need (textbooks, instructions for preparing for the first day, etc.)
- Consider calling students to welcome them to the class and see if they have questions
