Accommodations and Accessibility

ADA/Section 504 Coordinator Responsibilities

The UAS Office of Rights, Compliance, and Accountability (ORCA) is responsible for monitoring compliance with Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as well as state civil rights requirements regarding discrimination and harassment based on disability.

ORCA oversees prevention and education efforts, responds to reports and complaints, conducts inquiries and investigations, identifies and addresses patterns, and assesses effects on the campus climate so that UAS can address issues affecting the whole campus community.

Use this form to report an incident or concern regarding accessibility, or contact ORCA at uas.orca@alaska.edu.

Disability

The 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the 2008 ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA), Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, other federal and state laws, and the  University of Alaska Notice of Nondiscrimination require that individuals with disabilities have equal opportunity to enjoy campus programs, activities, resources, and benefits.

UAS will provide a working and learning environment in which no individual will be subjected to unlawful discrimination based on disability. Additionally, each qualified individual with a disability will be eligible to receive reasonable accommodations.

Reasonable Accommodations

Students:

Each qualified student with a disability will be eligible to receive appropriate academic adjustments and programmatic accommodations necessary for the student to access educational opportunities, programs, activities, or services in the most integrated setting possible. In order to receive disability related accommodations, students should contact UAS Disability Services.

Employees and Visitors:

UAS provides reasonable accommodations to employees, visitors, and job applicants with a medical condition, disability, or on the basis of religion, unless doing so would cause significant difficulty or expense. A reasonable accommodation is any change in the work environment (or in the way things are usually done) to help a person with a disability apply for a job, perform the duties of a job, or enjoy the benefits and privileges of employment or programs. In order to receive disability related accommodations, employees and visitors should contact UA Human Resources by email at ua-ada@alaska.edu or by calling 907-450-8200. Supervisors should work with UA Human Resources and should neither request nor retain medical documentation.

Pregnancy

Students and employees can be provided with assistance for conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions. Individuals may be required to submit medical information, and all medical information will be kept confidential. Visit the UAS Pregnancy Accommodations and the UA Pregnancy Accommodations pages for more information.

Religion

Students and employees at UAS can receive accommodations related to their religion. Religious accommodations may include prayer time and space and schedule adjustments. Students may work with ORCA to facilitate accommodation requests and employees should contact UA Human Resources by email at ua-ada@alaska.edu or by calling 907-450-8200.

Grievances

It is University policy not to discriminate on the basis of disability, pregnancy, or religion. If you feel that you or someone you know has been discriminated against, please submit a report to ORCA, or contact our office.
