Social events

We are organizing several social events, including an icebreaker reception, a short afternoon field trip to Mendenhall Glacier, and a mid-week excursion and banquet.

Icebreaker reception

We will hold an icebreaker reception from 5:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, June 19th. The reception will be at Forbidden Peak Brewery in Auke Bay, a short walk from the university and university housing.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center

We are planning a short trip to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, about 9 km from the university, to learn about the glacier's history and evolution of the proglacial landscape. The trip will occur at the end of the conference on the afternoon on Friday, June 24th. We will use university vans to shuttle people from campus to the visitor center.

Mendenhall Glacier

An ice marginal basin at Mendenhall Glacier that releases annual outburst floods.

Mid-week excursion and banquet

Click here for a brief field guide for the excursion, which also includes some links to relevant publications.

A day-long boat tour to Tracy Arm, a glacial fjord with two tidewater glaciers, will take place on Thursday, June 23rd. Space on the boat is limited to 130 passengers. On the return trip to Juneau participants will be dropped off at Orca Point Lodge, which is on a small island about 15 km from Juneau, for the symposium banquet.

The boat for Tracy Arm will depart from Statter Harbor (in Auke Bay) at 9:45 am and will drop us off at Orca Point Lodge at 7:00 pm. We will return to Statter Harbor at 9:30 pm.

The banquet will include local coho salmon, chicken, and vegetarian options.
