Biography

Dr. Cory J. Ortiz is the Dean of the School of Career Education at the University of Alaska Southeast, a position he has held since 2023. His extensive background in Career and Technical Education (CTE) spans across various educational roles and institutions. Before joining UAS, he served as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Technology, Design and Technical Education at Utah State University, and worked as a Work-Based Learning Coordinator and STEM Specialist for the Ogden School District.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ortiz has been dedicated to enhancing educational experiences and outcomes in CTE. His research focuses on technology and engineering education, teacher retention, and the implementation of high-impact practices. His dissertation explored the factors that keep technology and engineering teachers in the classroom, providing valuable insights into teacher retention in CTE fields.

At UAS, Dr. Ortiz manages a million-dollar budget, oversees faculty and staff, and collaborates with K-12 partners to develop meaningful career pathways. He has been instrumental in securing significant funding for technical and vocational education programs and establishing industry partnerships that benefit students and the community. Additionally, he is actively involved in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he contributes to various training and safety initiatives.

Dr. Ortiz is passionate about mentoring and supporting the next generation of educators and has presented his research at numerous national and international conferences. His publications cover a range of topics, including student motivation, early-career teacher mentoring, and the integration of drones in STEM education.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Ortiz is deeply committed to volunteer work. He has been a dedicated participant in the St. Baldrick's Foundation, raising funds for childhood cancer research through annual head-shaving events. He enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring the natural beauty of Alaska with his wife, Molly.
