Biography

Kevin White is an ecologist with diverse interests and extensive experience conducting research on wildlife in Alaska. He has worked on a variety species and ecosystems, with topics ranging from mountain goats and moose to American dippers, plant community ecology and snow. Focusing on questions about population ecology, habitat selection, and behavioral ecology, he strives to combine field biology with data analysis to understand ecological relationships and improve our capacity to address conservation and management challenges. He is particularly interested in mountain ecology, including how such systems are influenced by ongoing change. His current research is principally focused on the role of climate, weather and snow avalanches on the population ecology of mountain goats. Other interests and current projects focus on alpine plant phenology, mountain goat population monitoring, bighorn sheep-disease ecology and management, and mammalian biogeography and biodiversity (including Canada lynx) monitoring.

A mountain goatologist at heart, he spends as much time as possible in the alpine – hiking, skiing, and, perhaps, catching a glimpse of the “climbing bearded beast the color of winter”.
