Biography

Rebecka began her career in Grand Rapids, MI working her summers at a busy dermatology office. It was here that she found her passion for the healthcare field. Over time she worked in many roles not only in dermatology but also in family practice. She worked as a front desk receptionist, scheduler, medical assistant, medical biller, medical coder, cashier, and eventually worked her way up to practice manager. She has worked as a Medical Coding and Healthcare Services Instructor for an adult workforce development program for 6 years preparing students for the Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certification, the Certified Professional Coder exam, and co-taught students preparing for the Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (CRCS) exam. She moved to Alaska and began working for Providence Health. Here she gained experience as a medical coder in the Emergency Department, Inpatient, Observation, Skilled Nursing, Rehab, and lab. She has also worked for the Providence Virtual Care and Digital Health team as a billing and coding analyst for the TeleStroke, Telepsych, and Telehospitalist programs. Over time she completed her AAS in Medical Office Management and Health Information Technology, and later went on to receive her Bachelor of Science and Master of Health Information Management. In addition to Rebecka’s degree completion, she also became certified as a Professional Coder, Coding Specialist, Professional Biller, Documentation Expert—Outpatient, and Medical Assistant.

Rebecka is excited to start her new career as an Assistant Professor in the Health Information Management program at the University of Alaska Southeast. She hopes to bring real world experience and examples into the teaching environment and is looking forwarded to directing and teaching new students entering the HIM field.

Rebecka moved to Seward in 2020 with her family. She enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping, and spending time with family. On most any Saturday during the fall you can catch her watching a college football game, Go Blue! She has a husband that works in maintenance in Seward, a daughter in Seward who just opened her own business in a renovated school bus, and a son that is finishing up his senior year of high school and attending the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technology program at AVTEC in the spring.
