This gift will fund scholarships as well as a teaching-grade microscope.

Juneau, Alaska

Date of Press Release: February 4, 2011

The University of Alaska Southeast is pleased to announce a $42,500 gift from Icicle Seafoods, a seafood processing company founded in Petersburg in 1965 and currently one of the largest seafood processors in Alaska.

The gift from Icicle includes $7,500 for a teaching grade microscope for the Fish Tech program at the Ketchikan campus. The microscope will enable better digital image and web interface for distance learning programs. The Fisheries Technology Program prepares students for employment in a variety of fisheries occupations in Southeast Alaska with an emphasis on finfish fish culture and salmon hatchery technologies. The program offers a Certificate in Fisheries Technology as well as an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Five thousand dollars is for the Icicle Seafoods Career Ed / Dual Enrollment Scholarship program. This program provides support for tuition and fees for Petersburg High School students who are enrolled in Career Education or dual enrollment classes at the University of Alaska Southeast, allowing them to take college classes and accrue college credits while still in high school.

Thirty thousand dollars is designated for the newly endowed Icicle Seafoods scholarship fund with $5,000 being set aside for next year’s awards. This fund provides support to full-time students attending UAS who are residents of Petersburg, employees of Petersburg Fisheries, or Icicle Seafoods Fishermen. Scholarship applications are available online at uas.alaska.edu/financial_aid

The scholarship deadline for the coming Fall 2011-Spring 2012 Academic Year is February 15th, 2011.

Icicle’s $42,500 contribution to UAS is part of a $200,000 gift to the University of Alaska made in December, 2010. This is the fourth consecutive such donation.
